Artist-in-Residence Jason Vieaux teams with former Ernst Stiefel Quartet-in-Residence, the Escher Quartet, for an exceptional evening of chamber music. Vieaux performs Ginastera’s only original composition for guitar, while the Escher String Quartet finds the historical through-line connecting the seemingly disparate quartets of Haydn and Shostakovich. Mozart’s joyful genius infuses this Sunday afternoon concert featuring the elegant Concerto for Flute and Harp. In his Caramoor debut, French-Canadian conductor, Bernard Labadie, an internationally recognized expert in 18th-Century music, brings his effervescent style to a program of youthful Mozart works. The Westerlies, a self-described “accidental brass quartet” formed by four childhood friends from Seattle, are known for their adventurous explorations with jazz, roots, and chamber music influences. Going against chamber music tradition, the group performs without sheet music to create a unique, visceral connection with audiences. “Skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers” (NPR’s Fresh Air), this concert will feature original music from The Westerlies’ self-titled sophomore album, released in 2016.
