New Parking Enforcement Techonology

In case you missed this from the Town of Bedford:

As you may have heard, we’ve discontinued the use of “chalking tires” to monitor overtime parking and replaced it with new License Plate Reader (LPR) technology.  It is in use throughout town.  The LPR monitors vehicles through state of the art Global Positioning System (GPS) technology which alerts our parking enforcement officers to vehicles that are in violation of our overtime parking limits. In addition, this new technology identifies vehicles whose owners have overdue parking tickets and other parking violations. Why are we doing this? With photographs of the parked vehicle and GPS location, the system is more accurate. It also is more efficient and enables our parking enforcement personnel to cover parking areas more quickly. The most important impetus is the need for parking in each of our hamlets. Parking is the lifeblood of our businesses.  We are in regular contact with our business associations and always sensitive to how we might best set parking limits and provide public parking. While the Town is looking for ways to increase public parking, the possibilities are highly limited. Turnover of parking spaces has the effect of making more parking spaces available.  In conclusion, this is a fair and efficient system, and while some who are ticketed may object, it is for the good of the community.
